When audiences arrive at Keynsham Music Festival, they see the stages, the performers, the lights and the energy. What they don’t always see is the dedicated team of student volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen.
For us as organisers, these young volunteers are not just helpers – they are an essential part of the festival family.
Real Experience in a Real Festival Environment
Each year, we welcome student volunteers from local colleges and schools who are keen to gain hands-on experience in live events. Many are studying music, media, production, event management or performing arts.
Backstage, they support with:
- Artist liaison and hospitality
- Stage changeovers
- Equipment movement and set preparation
- Accreditation and access control
- General production assistance
They work alongside experienced professionals, learning first-hand what it takes to run a large-scale community festival smoothly and safely.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We believe in giving students meaningful responsibility. This isn’t shadowing from the sidelines – it’s active participation in a live, fast-paced environment where teamwork and communication are critical.
Through their involvement, student volunteers develop:
- Confidence under pressure
- Professional communication skills
- Time management and organisation
- Problem-solving abilities
- A deeper understanding of live event production
For many, it’s their first experience of working backstage at a major event, and it can be transformative.
Building Pathways Into the Creative Industries
One of our aims at Keynsham Music Festival is to create pathways into the creative and events industries. By offering practical experience, references and networking opportunities, we help young people take meaningful steps toward future careers.
Several former volunteers have gone on to work in live sound, stage management, event production and media. Seeing them build careers in areas they first explored with us is incredibly rewarding.
A Team We Rely On
Behind every seamless stage transition and well-managed artist arrival is a team of calm, capable volunteers making it happen. Their enthusiasm, reliability and willingness to learn are invaluable to us.
As organisers, we are proud to invest time in mentoring and supporting these students – and we are equally grateful for the energy and dedication they bring to the festival weekend.
More Than Volunteering
For our student volunteers, this isn’t just about gaining experience. It’s about being part of something bigger – contributing to an event that brings the whole community together.
And for us, they represent the future of live events: skilled, passionate and ready to step confidently into the spotlight – even if they choose to stay just behind it.
